Description: Rough, dark-brown to black outer surface (peridium); pale to dark brown interior (gleba) with intricate white marbling; distinctive strong aroma, less intense than the black Périgord truffle.
Calcareous (chalky or limestone) soils, associated with oak, hazel, beech, and pine. Found in southern UK and much of Europe.
None known when correctly identified; risk of confusion with non-culinary truffle species of lesser value.
