Choice edible when cooked thoroughly; tall, conical, honeycombed fruitbody; black to dark brown ridges, lighter pits

Habitat

Found in burn sites, disturbed ground, and woodchip beds; occasionally in mixed woodland across the UK.

Hazards & care

Never eat raw — contains hydrazine toxins that are destroyed only by thorough cooking; can cause gastric upset in some even when cooked
